8 FOODS THAT BOOST IMMUNITY = http://www.askdrsears.com/html/4/t042500...

Your immune system is your body's natural defence system. It protects your body against infection from bacteria and viruses. When you're ill, it also fights infection, and helps you to get better.

If you're feeling under the weather, or if you keep getting colds or other illnesses, there are many ways you can give your immune system a boost:

* Swap junk foods and microwave meals in favour of fresh fruit and vegetables, and wholegrain foods. Fruit, veg, and wholegrain food contain lots of immune boosting vitamins and minerals.

* Cut down on caffeinated drinks such as tea, coffee, and cola. Instead, drink lots of water, unsweetened fruit juices and herbal teas. Water will flush out your system, and fruit juice is packed full of vitamins and minerals. Herbal teas make a refreshing alternative to tea and coffee.

* If you smoke, it's best to quit. Smoking damages your immune system and puts you at risk of many serious health conditions, such as cancer and heart disease. Passive smoking can also affect the people around you. If you have to smoke, do it away from other people, especially children.

* Get plenty of immune boosting exercise. As well as lowering your risk of getting long-term health conditions like heart disease and osteoporosis, exercising for 30 minutes five times a week will improve circulation and keep your body's defences on top form. The exercise you do doesn't have to be too taxing - anything that gets you out of breath and sweaty can count towards your 30 minutes.

* If you're always tired, get more sleep. Sleeping is your body's way of repairing your defences so you're ready to fight infections. Aim for around 7-8 hours every night, and keep to a regular bedtime, even at weekends.

* Make sure you don't get stressed, as your heart beats faster and your immune system slows down. Take time to relax whenever you feel the pressure, and get loads of sunshine and fresh air to keep your spirits high.

* Avoid recreational drugs, which will damage your immune system. Becoming reliant on some types of medication can also affect your immunity, so only take medication when you really need to.

Question [joyce]: What are some good natural remedies to help stop the progression of arthritis?

I'm not sure what kind of arthritis I have. I always assumed that it was osteoarthritis because I don't have any disfigured joints. However, after reading more about rheumatoid arthritis, I wonder if I have that. My joints all over are stiff and achy and my fingers are puffy. I heard that fish oil is good. How much of this can I safely take? What about other supplements? Thanks!

Answer:

Natural remedies for arthritis offer a real alternative for people who desire to avoid the potential side effects of over-the-counter as well as prescription anti-inflammatory drugs such as Vioxx, Celebrex, Bextra and others. Sometimes the side effects of drugs can be worse than the original symptoms. For example, Vioxx and Bextra, were pulled from the market due to an increased risk of heart disease, stroke and lethal skin conditions.

The most attractive consideration of many natural arthritis remedies is that they are safe, and have not been shown to cause any strange side effects, like some of those caused by pharmaceuticals.

Here are five of the more popular natural remedies for arthritis:

1) Glucosamine & Chondroitin are two of the more popular arthritis relief supplements. These are found naturally in the body, and as a supplement, they can aid in promoting good joint health and reliable joint repair.

2) MSM is a naturally occurring sulfur compound that behaves as an anti-inflammatory. MSM can reduce swelling in the same way that many arthritis medications are designed to do, but without the side effects of putting pharmaceutical chemicals into your body.

3) Manganese is an important antioxidant nutrient that has been shown to facilitate enzymes and slow the aging process. It is useful in the effective treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.

4) Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) has been shown to be effective in the maintenance of the integrity of cells and tissues, which will slow the progression of arthritis in most people.

5) Turmeric and Ginger Extract are two powerful anti-inflammatory herbal extracts that have been shown to be more effective than NSAIDs in the treatment of the rheumatoid and osteoarthritis.

These natural arthritis remedies offer lots of hope and promise for the relief of the painful symptoms of arthritis. Recent medical scientific studies have suggested that each of these five remedies work well alone, but work better when used in tandem.
